The Pousada Santa Marinha - a former 12 century Augustinian monastery - sits majestically on a hill overlooking the historical centre of Guimarăes. This luxury hotel has won national awards for the incredible restoration that has been accomplished.

The true history of this location are lost in the mists of time. There are signs of Roman occupation - and Moorish - as well as pagan remains from the 1st century.

Several architectural elements remain from various of these eras. The typically Moorish-Arabic door a well preserved masterpiece of elegance, serenity and harmony. Several signs of the Romanesque, Gothic and Classic architecture can be seen around the main building - dating back to the 7th century.
